Overview
Masjid Quba lies about 3 km south of Masjid an-Nabawi. It is widely regarded as the first mosque built in Islam, established by the Prophet ﷺ when he stayed at Quba on arrival from Makkah during the Hijrah.
Significance
Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to visit Quba every Saturday, walking or riding, and pray two rak’ahs there (Sahih al-Bukhari 1193–1194). The Prophet ﷺ also said: “Whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to the mosque of Quba and prays in it, will have a reward like that of Umrah” (Sunan Ibn Majah 1412).
Differing views
The Qur’an praises “a mosque founded on righteousness from the first day” (Qur’an 9:108). Many commentators apply this to Masjid Quba, while a hadith in Sahih Muslim applies it to the Prophet’s Mosque; scholars have explained that the description can fit both.
History
The mosque was rebuilt many times. The present white building with its minarets and domes was designed in the 1980s, and a major expansion was announced in the 2020s.

Visiting information
Open for all five prayers. Many visitors walk from Masjid an-Nabawi along the Quba Walking Trail, or come by taxi or bus. Performing wudu before leaving your accommodation follows the hadith above.
