Umrah is the “lesser pilgrimage” to Makkah, which can be performed at any time of the year. Below is a short overview of its rites. For detailed rulings, please follow a qualified scholar.

1. Ihram at the miqat

Enter ihram — the state of consecration — at or before your miqat. Pilgrims coming from Madinah use Dhul-Hulayfah (Abyar Ali). Make the intention and recite the talbiyah.

2. Tawaf

On reaching Masjid al-Haram, circle the Kaaba seven times, starting and ending at the Black Stone line. Then pray two rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, and drink from Zamzam.

3. Sa’i

Walk seven times between Safa and Marwa, starting at Safa and ending at Marwa (Qur’an 2:158).

4. Halq or taqsir

Men shave or shorten their hair; women cut a fingertip’s length. Your Umrah is then complete.

The Qur’an says: “And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah” (Qur’an 2:196).
