Overview
Maqam Ibrahim is a stone kept inside a gilded glass-and-metal enclosure near the Kaaba. Islamic tradition identifies it as the stone on which the Prophet Ibrahim stood while building the Kaaba.
Significance
The Qur’an says: “And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer” (Qur’an 2:125), and mentions “clear signs, [such as] the standing place of Abraham” (Qur’an 3:97). After completing tawaf, pilgrims pray two rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, or anywhere in the mosque when it is crowded.
History
The stone’s exact position relative to the Kaaba is discussed in historical sources; many reports state that it was moved slightly back from the Kaaba wall in the time of Caliph Umar. Its enclosure has been renewed several times, most recently under the Saudi expansions.
