Overview
Jabal Thawr is a mountain to the south of Makkah. Near its top is the Cave of Thawr, where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq hid for three nights at the start of the migration (Hijrah) to Madinah.
History
The sirah sources relate that the Quraysh searched for them, and that Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr brought news while Amir ibn Fuhayrah grazed sheep nearby to cover their tracks. They then continued to Madinah with a guide.
Significance
The Qur’an refers to this event: “…when he was one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us’” (Qur’an 9:40).

Visiting information
The climb is long and steep; plan for several hours in total and avoid the heat of the day. Many visitors view the mountain from its base as part of a Makkah Ziyarat tour.
