Overview
Arafat is a wide plain south-east of Makkah, outside the Haram boundary. Within it stands a small hill, Jabal al-Rahmah (the Mount of Mercy).
Significance
Standing at Arafat on 9 Dhul-Hijjah (the Day of Arafah) is the central pillar of Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Hajj is Arafah” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 889). The Qur’an mentions pilgrims departing from Arafat (Qur’an 2:198).
History
During his only Hajj in 10 AH (632 CE), the Prophet ﷺ delivered his Farewell Sermon at Arafat, in the area of Wadi Uranah where Masjid Namirah now stands.

Visiting information
Arafat is not part of Umrah. Outside Hajj season it can be visited on a Ziyarat tour, including Jabal al-Rahmah. Climbing Jabal al-Rahmah is not a rite of Hajj.
