Overview
Zamzam is the well inside the precinct of Masjid al-Haram. Its water is distributed throughout the Two Holy Mosques and is drunk by pilgrims from around the world.
History
In a long hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet ﷺ describes how Hajar, left with the infant Ismail in the valley of Makkah, ran seven times between Safa and Marwa searching for water, until the water of Zamzam gushed forth. The well was later lost and, according to the sirah, re-dug by Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet’s grandfather.
Significance
The sa’i between Safa and Marwa commemorates Hajar’s search, and drinking Zamzam is a recommended practice for pilgrims.

Visiting information
The well itself is below ground and not open to visitors. Zamzam water is freely available from dispensers throughout Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi. Airline and customs rules apply to carrying Zamzam home.
