Overview
Masjid al-Khayf is the principal mosque of Mina, located at the foot of a mountain on the southern side of the valley, not far from the first (small) Jamarah. “Khayf” refers to ground that rises slightly above the valley floor.
History
Historical sources state that the Prophet ﷺ prayed at al-Khayf in Mina during his Farewell Hajj. The mosque has been rebuilt many times; the present building dates from Saudi-era reconstruction and is designed for very large congregations during Hajj.
Significance
Pilgrims staying in Mina during the days of Tashreeq often try to pray in this mosque, following the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.
