Overview
Badr is a town in the Madinah region, south-west of Madinah on the old caravan route between Makkah and Syria. It is known for the Battle of Badr, the first major battle between the Muslims of Madinah and the Quraysh of Makkah.
The Battle of Badr (2 AH / 624 CE)
The battle took place in Ramadan of 2 AH. The sirah sources commonly state that the Muslims numbered a little over three hundred, while the Quraysh force was far larger — Encyclopaedia Britannica describes the Makkan army as outnumbering the Muslims about three to one. The battle ended in a decisive victory for the Muslims, and several leaders of the Quraysh were killed. Many historical reports date the battle to 17 Ramadan.
Significance
The Qur’an says: “And already had Allah given you victory at Badr while you were few in number” (Qur’an 3:123). Surah al-Anfal (Qur’an 8) was revealed in connection with this battle. The Companions who took part in it are honoured in Islamic tradition as the people of Badr.
Today
The area contains the burial place of the Muslims martyred in the battle and a mosque. The Battle of Badr is also referred to on our Mount Uhud page, as the Quraysh marched to Uhud the following year to avenge their defeat.
