Overview
Al-Baqi (Baqi al-Gharqad) is the main cemetery of Madinah, adjoining the south-eastern side of Masjid an-Nabawi’s courtyard.
History
It has been used since the time of the Prophet ﷺ. Buried there, according to historical sources, are many of the Companions, several wives of the Prophet ﷺ, his daughters, his son Ibrahim, his uncle al-Abbas, and the third caliph Uthman ibn Affan, among many others. Most graves are unmarked.
Significance
Sahih Muslim records that the Prophet ﷺ went out to al-Baqi at night and prayed for its people, and taught the greeting for those visiting graves: “Peace be upon you, abode of believing people…” (Sahih Muslim 974).

Opening hours and access rules are set by the authorities (commonly after Fajr and after Asr) and may change; women's access has historically been restricted. Visit quietly and follow the Sunnah of greeting and praying for the deceased.
