Overview
Uhud is a long reddish mountain a few kilometres north of Masjid an-Nabawi. At its foot lie the graves of the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud and the small hill known as the Archers’ Hill (Jabal al-Rumat).
The Battle of Uhud (3 AH / 625 CE)
The Quraysh marched on Madinah to avenge their defeat at Badr. The Prophet ๏ทบ placed archers on the small hill with orders not to leave it. When many of them left their position believing the battle won, the Makkan cavalry attacked from behind, and the Muslims suffered heavy losses. About seventy Muslims were martyred, among them the Prophet’s uncle Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, and the Prophet ๏ทบ himself was wounded. The Qur’an discusses the lessons of the battle in Surah Al Imran (Qur’an 3:121 onwards).
Significance
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: “Uhud is a mountain which loves us and which we love” (Sahih Muslim 1393).

Visiting information
The martyrs' cemetery is viewed from outside its fence. The Archers' Hill can be climbed by a short path. The area has parking, a mosque and shops, and is a standard stop on every Madinah Ziyarat tour.
