Overview
Masjid Addas is a small historic mosque in the Al-Mathnah district of Taif, an area of old orchards. Local tradition connects it with the place where the Prophet ﷺ rested after leaving Taif.
The story of Addas
The early biography of the Prophet ﷺ (Ibn Ishaq, in Sirat Ibn Hisham) relates that after the people of Taif rejected him, the Prophet ﷺ rested in an orchard. A Christian servant named Addas, from Nineveh, brought him grapes. When the Prophet ﷺ began with “Bismillah” and spoke of Prophet Yunus of Nineveh, Addas was moved and accepted Islam.
The hardest day
Aisha (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ described the day he presented his message to Ibn Abd Yalil, and was rejected, as harder than Uhud; on his way back the angel of the mountains came to him, and he chose mercy for his people, hoping their descendants would worship Allah alone (Sahih al-Bukhari 3231). Scholars connect this with the journey to Taif.
