Overview
Masjid Abdullah ibn Abbas is the best-known mosque of Taif, in the old centre of the city. It stands beside the cemetery where the Companion Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA), cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, was buried.
Significance
Ibn Abbas (RA) is remembered as one of the greatest scholars of the Qur’an among the Companions. Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet ﷺ embraced him and prayed: “O Allah, teach him the Book” (Sahih al-Bukhari 75). He spent his final years in Taif and passed away there.
History
A mosque has stood here since early Islamic times. The present building dates from a rebuilding in 1958, when the older structures, including a dome over the grave, were removed.
