Overview
Masjid al-Ghamamah is a small historic mosque a short walk south-west of Masjid an-Nabawi, with a distinctive group of grey domes.
History
It stands in the area of the open prayer ground (musalla) where, according to historical sources, the Prophet ﷺ prayed the Eid prayers in his later years. The present building dates largely from the Ottoman period and has been restored in modern times.
The name
“Ghamamah” means “cloud”. It is popularly explained by a report that a cloud shaded the Prophet ﷺ while he prayed there for rain. This explanation is widely repeated, but its authenticity is not firmly established.
